L.I.T. Program

The leadership component at Camp Smitty is a great opportunity for young people, 15 to 16 years of age, to develop their communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills in a natural setting that is conducive to personal growth. Campers in the Leaders in Training (LIT) program have access to positive and supportive role models who facilitate a participatory, fun, fast-paced, experiential learning opportunity.

Some of the areas covered include topics such as: Group Dynamics (Team Building, Consensus, and Inclusion), Communication (Feedback, Active Listening, and Presenting with Confidence), and Leadership (Types/Styles, Problem Solving, and Goal-setting).

Camp Smitty’s LIT program will focus on these essential skills through a variety of workshops and activities. The LIT campers will have a 2 day trip "off-camp" as well as receive certfications to enhance their resume (Bronze Medallion/Cross, Emergency First aid and CPR)

LIT is offered in session 1, 2 and 3.

In CIT, our top LIT candidates will be asked to come back for session 4 where they will co-counsel a cabin under the guidance of the LIT Coordinator. This will be a great opportunity for the young counselors in training to put all of their learned skills into practice for a 10 day session as they guide and lead one of our camper cabins. Our CIT campers will also earn 80 hours of community service as they develop the essential skills in becoming effective leaders and role models.
